The Rivers School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school serving 490 students in grades 6 through 12, located on a beautiful 52- acre campus alongside the sprawling Nonesuch Pond in Weston, 17 miles west of Boston.  The School’s motto of Excellence with Humanity is an overt guiding principle for the school which offers a warm, tight-knit community underscored by close student-faculty relationships and strong, rigorous and challenging academic, arts, and athletic programs. Founded in 1915, Rivers recently celebrated its centennial and is engaged in the initial phase of a comprehensive fundraising campaign, with a public launch expected within the next six months.

Rivers seeks a dynamic, experienced Director of Communications and Marketing (DCM) to develop and implement an integrated messaging strategy that will elevate the visibility of the School consistent with its strategic plan, campaign goals, and enrollment objectives. The DCM and his or her team of 3 will design clear and effective communications that invite all constituents to understand and appreciate the Rivers experience, while ensuring brand identity, messaging coherence, and consistency across all channels.  The DCM reports to the Director of Advancement and works collaboratively with the Head of School and the Senior Administrative Team, particularly the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid and the Director of the Conservatory. The ideal candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for telling the entire school story while being nimble and skilled at building cohesion across media platforms.

Essential Functions and Key Objectives

  • Develop an integrated content strategy to elevate the visibility of the School including the Conservatory and summer programs
  • Develop and implement annual and longer term marketing and communications plans consistent with the School’s strategic plan, enrollment management plan and capital campaign goals
  • Provide skilled leadership engaging both with key departments and with all community members to tell the School’s story; demonstrate the effective use of distributed content and the encouragement of citizen writers
  • Build messaging excellence and cohesion across different platforms while implementing best practices in digital media; ensure brand identity, messaging quality, and consistency throughout all media; manage all printed and digital deliverables for the school
  • Develop, mentor and lead the communications and marketing staff
  • Be fully engaged in the life of the School with the goal of being well-informed so all facets of the School can be effectively promoted
  • Support senior administrators during accreditation reviews
  • Work with colleagues to identify areas in which greater coordination or collaboration can improve the quality or cost-effectiveness of operations, services and administrative support
  • With senior administrators, maintain positive relationships with the School’s neighbors and local town officials; implement a comprehensive public relations program
  • Maintain appropriate professional memberships and represent Rivers at related meetings and conferences
  • Serve as the School’s spokesperson in communications with the media

Qualifications and Skills Required for Position

  • A strong intellect, a vision for effective communications and marketing for an independent school, and 7 years of senior-level experience creating and executing communications and marketing strategies
  • Outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills; the ability to work collaboratively and proactively with the School’s diverse and inclusive community to advance the mission of the School
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and mentor a team of direct reports
  • An enthusiasm and energy for telling the entire School story across various platforms
  • A sophisticated understanding of the complexities of an independent school
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to effectively complete all required background checks
