Advocacy, simply put, is the application of pressure and
influence on those persons or entities that have the power
to give you what you want. Public relations pros will recognize
many of the power-building elements as tools of their own
trade. We call them 'power tools' and there are six of them
through which we apply such pressure and exert influence
to build power for an organization's mission:
1. Research and Data Collection
2. Coalition Building and Maintenance
3. Fundraising and Development
4. Grassroots and Key Contacts
5. Media Advocacy
6. Decision-Maker Advocacy & Lobbying
M+R Strategic Services is pleased to offer this user-friendly
advocacy training for members of the Yankee Chapter. This
training will focus on the structure and real-life application
of advocacy framework known as the Power Prism. The Power
Prism is a model for planning, executing and evaluating
advocacy campaigns. M+R clients including the American Heart
Association, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, Susan G. Komen
for the Cure, Clean Air Task Force and the Massachusetts
Tobacco Control Program have used the Power Prism as a tool
for advancing their missions. They like it because it is
simple, disciplined, and effective.
Key Points for Yankee Chapter PRSA members: Training
participants need not be seasoned advocates. In fact, you
may not ever work for clients that do anything even remotely
connected to advocacy. That's okay. The work of building
affinity or elevating a brand or a cause all draw upon similar
strategies. The benefits of understanding this framework
include:
- Most organizations - nonprofit, corporate, and public
agencies - have some stake in the advocacy game. Perhaps
they are trying to influence policy, regulations, funding,
brand loyalty, or stakeholder engagement. Understanding
the context of the work you do for that organization -
and how you can leverage that context - will make you
a more valuable asset to their team.
- This is your chance to be a little selfish and use a
seasoned (but not yet jaded) advocacy specialist to help
inform your work. Nothing is off limits. Feel free to
ask specific questions that relate to your own experience.
This is an active participatory training session will
expose you to some tried and true advocacy strategies
and tactics. Ideally, you will leave with a few more tools
in your professional bag of tricks.
Cost: $35 for Yankee PRSA members/ $45 nonmembers
