APR Focus: An Introduction to Ethics and Public Relations and the Rise in Corporate Social Responsibility

Friday, Nov 18 and Friday, Dec 2nd from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Maintaining ethical standards in the age of ‘alternative facts’ can be both a balancing act and a struggle—but it doesn’t have to be. Framing business decisions and actions in ethical standards can help you guide your organization in the face of the toughest crisis or criticism. This program explores the process that PR professionals and business leaders can use to make decisions about what course of action is the right one to take.

Adapted from Arthur W. Page Center course material and led by APR accredited MPRC board members, this two-part program will provide an Introduction to Public Relations Ethics and explore working theories that apply specifically to PR practitioners. We’ll look at ethical obligations that should be applied when working with clients and the public, and discuss ways in which PR as a profession is working to develop stronger ethical standards. Next, we’ll explore ethics as relates to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for external communities, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for internal communities, and how shared priorities can allow CSR and DEI policies to mutually reinforce each other. We will include interactive polling and allow time for Q&A and case study discussion. Attending both sessions will help APRs earn 1 CEU for PR and Ethics that is needed for APR accreditation renewal.

Maine Public Relations Council & PRSA members and APRs: $20 (each session), Non members $35, Students free.
